Investigator-Initiated Trials (IITs)

Non-commercial clinical studies are often called investigator-initiated trials, or IITs for short.

Unlike the contract research trials commissioned by pharmaceutical companies, IITs are initiated by academic institutions, scientists and doctors, or other non-commercial organizations. The Universitätsmedizin Göttingen (UMG) normally takes full total responsibility for IITs, acting as the sponsor as defined by the German Medicines Act (AMG).

The primary objective of non-commercial clinical trials is to improve medical treatment on the basis of insights gained in the given study.

IITs are subject to the same regulatory provisions as contract research studies, and are conducted in accordance with AMG, GCP-V, and MPG.

IITs can be funded by:

  • Public institutions such as the BMBF and the DFG
  • Foundations
  • The pharmaceuticals companies

As an enterprise operating on a mandate from an academic institution, the IFS has the infrastructure, experience, and expertise necessary to support researching staff of the UMG and further German clinics and teaching hospitals in designing and conducting IITs.
